Ralph P. Hall

Ralph Hall is Chair and Professor in the Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEPP) Program within the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at Virginia Tech and Director of the Center for Future Work Places and Practices (CFWPP) within the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT). He also serves as Head of Outreach and Engagement for the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies (CEUTS), Affiliated Faculty in the Honors College and the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC), and Affiliated Faculty with the Power and Energy Center (PEC). His interdisciplinary research examines how sustainable development principles can be applied to complex socio-technical systems, with particular emphasis on transportation systems in developed regions and rural water supply and sanitation systems in developing regions.

Hall is co-author of Sustainable Transportation: Indicators, Frameworks, and Performance Management (2015) and Technology, Globalization, and Sustainable Development: Transforming the Industrial State (2018), and is currently collaborating with Professor Nicholas Ashford of MIT on a revised edition of the latter. He holds an MEng from the University of Southampton and an MEng, MS, and PhD from MIT. At Virginia Tech, he teaches courses in sustainable development, economic development, urban public issues, water and sanitation in developing regions, and international development planning.
