Stephanie Smith

Stephanie Smith is an Associate Professor in the Center for Public Administration and Policy, School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech. Her research resides at the intersection of public health and policymaking processes globally and nationally, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. She has a particular interest in understanding why some public health issues are neglected compared to others—when the reasons are not obvious. Her research is published in The Lancet, Social Science & Medicine, Health Policy and Planning, Global Public Health andGlobalization and Health.
Before joining Virginia Tech, Smith was a member of the faculty at the University of New Mexico, worked in the nonprofit sector in San Francisco, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer. She holds a Ph.D. in public administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. At Virginia Tech, she teaches courses on global health policy dynamics, theories of the policy process, and research methods.
