Why pursue a Master of Urban and Regional Planning at Virginia Tech?
Current DC campus student Aaron Bethencourt shares his experience:

What attracted you to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program at Virginia Tech?
I was originally attracted to the program for its affordability and location in Arlington, but that’s barely scraping the surface as to what the program offers. Not only is it among the oldest programs in the nation, but the alumni network in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area is vast and supportive.

How is the MURP program preparing you for your goals?
The MURP program has given me guidance and knowledge as to what career options and opportunities are out there, and the professors and alumni network have been happy to connect me with any opportunities I’ve been interested in. The professors are always available and ready to assist in any way they can.

In what ways do you feel connected to your classmates and the program?
My classmates are incredibly smart, and I learn so much from them. My favorite thing about our students though is the diversity of knowledge we all bring to the table. We’re all passionate about planning and have different experiences and interests that always contribute to a lively, enlightening conversation.

Are you currently working in the planning field in any capacity?
I am currently interning with the City’s of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities within their Division of Park Planning, Design + Capital Projects, where I’ve had the opportunity to conduct and present research related to equity in open space. My supervisor is an alumna of the MURP program.

Are there any other planning-related activities or groups you are a part of aside from your studies?
I am a member of our local chapter of the American Planning Association (APA), and I look forward to attending the upcoming national APA Conference in San Diego. Our student organization, the Capital Area Student Planning Association (CASPA), puts on a multitude of events throughout the semester that keep us coming together outside of the classroom for community service, learning, and just an all-around great time.

Overall, how do you feel about your decision to study at VT for a MURP?
I am entirely satisfied with my decision to take my first steps toward my dream career with Virginia Tech. From the professors to the courses to my classmates, I am consistently impressed with quality of our program.
